Fez Medina // Morocco
Wandering through the labyrinth of streets in the Fez medina can be daunting. Just narrow alleyways – some leading to courtyards with more alleys shooting off, others leading to nowhere. They have no names and no organized layout. It’s said that defense was kept in mind in their design. If the city was invaded, the enemy would get lost when trying to navigate the streets.
Getting lost is a given, and it can take you hours to find your way back to the place you once were – but that’s exactly what I was hoping for. To wander and get lost in the streets. There are no cars or motorcycles to worry about, only the occasional donkey coming through the streets.
I wanted to make photos of the medieval town that hasn’t changed much in the past 900 years. The artisans still busy with their craftwork the way their ancestors were. The markets still supplying fruits and vegetables to the locals as always, and the mosques still announcing the call to prayer 5 times a day, as they’ve done for centuries.
Craftsman create masterpieces out of brass, wood, leather, and threads. Here a shop-owner sits in his lamp shop, surrounded by the hand tooled brass lamps that Morocco is famous for.
