Hoh Rainforest // Washington
The forest was green in every direction. I wandered through the dense ferns and moss covered tree trunks that have blown over in years past. The forest is thick, it’s difficult to find a place to put your foot sometimes, and you’re almost always climbing over a fallen log or rock. Getting equipment through the web of green was a challenge.
Everything is damp and soaked. It’s a rainforest after all, and the lichen and moss that covers almost every inch of the woods soaks up that water like a sponge. As I trudged, my pants and boots were wet in no time, and I stopped to make sure the lens caps were on my cameras for now. The sun was peaking in and out. When the clouds would cover the sun, an eerie darkness would come over the forest. Then, the sun would peek through and a magical light would spill across the sea of green. You would first feel like you were in a horror movie, then suddenly – as the sun peaked through, a fairy tale.
I constantly looked down to get my footing, after a while I noticed 8 inch banana slugs at my feet. They were really incredible, and it was a nice reminder of where I was. I explored and more more photos of the forest, then suddenly I hit a creek bed, where the light could really come through the edge of the forest. That’s when I made this image.
