Sometimes, I’m looking for epic landscape images, sometimes it’s far more subtle images that can best describe an area. The textures are often what we first see, they’re on the surface of everything around us. Textures are the fundamental building blocks to a landscape and some of the most descriptive imagery that you can photograph.
My purpose is both in the art and the expedition. I’m constantly aware of textures as I hike. Sandstone, tree bark, vegetation, water, anything that can describe a place with a beautiful composition. My eyes scan as I go. The landscapes take on art forms in front of me and I imagine small frames as I look ahead. As I hike further, the light changes, and the light is everything. One composition can offer a multitude of images with changing light.
