Pensacola, Florida // USA
I found myself on the beach in late October scouting for a location to shoot a portrait later that evening. I almost knew better than to try Pensacola’s incredibly popular public beach. While I had only been once when I was a child, I knew it would be littered with people.
My intent wasn’t to make images, but I brought my camera along anyway, just in case. The wind was quite strong, and I noticed that there were quite a few surfers coming and going in the parking lot. When I arrived at the beach I could see the massive waves crashing under the pier. It wasn’t long before I found myself walking out on the pier to get a bird’s eye view of the happenings. There were 20-30 surfers catching waves in the chilly October water. I couldn’t help but think that this may be their last ride for a while.
Summer was gone, but they’re still holding on.
