March 12 // 10:54AM
Vareid // Norway
The early morning was beautiful but gloomy. I camped right here on the water and spent the morning slowly easing into the day. The weather can be very unpredictable here. The wind would whip, then it would stop – then start up again. It was dark and gloomy, and the light on this day felt as elusive as the feeling in my fingers. I spent the morning packing up and didn’t bother trying to make any photos. I don’t like the cold, so camping 350 miles north of the arctic circle in winter was an exercise in passion.
But then the clouds opened up and the sun started to peek through, and suddenly my arctic prison turned into a paradise. As a photographer, those moments are enough to get the adrenaline pumping and suddenly you forget about the cold. I grabbed my gear and crawled down to the waters edge.
The wind made it difficult to keep my camera still, even with a tripod. I stayed to make several photos as the light changed. After every image, I decided that I had enough, and that I got the shot- but then the light would get better and I would take another photo.
This single day would give me almost all of my best images from my time in Norway.
