Typically my travels take me to the natural places of the world. Where trees tower above you and blanket the landscape, or where boulders are so large you could have a foot race on top
Sometimes, and increasingly lately, I’ve been drawn to the man made, and to the people of the world. To made sense of the the chaos and find beauty and form in the mundane has been the goal on these excursions. Feeling a bit like a fish out of water sometimes, I push forward, making more mistakes than photographs – but learning from them.
This particular day was the one where I would be heading to the airport, and off to another destination. I really hadn’t made many images in the days before, and I felt guilty that I had spent so much time chasing baguettes and pain au chocolat all over the city. One pâtisserie after another. I decided I would try my best to make the most of the last morning before I had to head out of town. When I woke up and looked out the window of my apartment, it was raining. The cold in the past few days I could deal with, after all, dropping into bakeries and cafes to sample the pastries with coffee does tend to warm you up a bit. But the rain – that would change things
I pushed myself to go out anyway, just across the Seine, there I would make some images and come on back -before it really starting to deluge on the city
I stood on two corners for the next 45 minutes or so and tried to make photos of Parisians making their way in the rain. Their umbrellas were all different and the rain became the drama that the light wasn’t. I shot this photo of these faceless pedestrians, then headed back to pack up and head out of town.
